Unlike much of the U.S. brick and mortar retail industry, independent pet stores continue to thrive.

A person’s connection with his or her pet runs deep. Often times they’re unwilling to compromise quality for Fluffy or Fido, who may prefer the finer things in life like organic food and memory foam beds.

Millennials adopting pets into their home and retiring baby boomers looking for companionship are spurring growth for the industry, said Don McIntyre, chief executive of Animal Supply Co., which distributes pet food and supplies to 7,000 independent shops around the country.
